Job summary

San José State University seeks a Transition Success Counselor to provide non-clinical guidance for Guardian Scholars students, supporting their retention and success. You will collaborate with campus and community partners, conduct individual and group sessions, and help navigate housing, employment, and further study options.

You will engage in assessments, crisis management, transition planning, and referrals while staying informed on legislation affecting foster youth and program policy.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field with counseling-focused coursework.
• Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience; master’s may substitute for one year.
• Advanced understanding of confidentiality and ethical guidelines in student services.

Responsibilities

• Provide holistic life skills coaching to Guardian Scholars students’ personal and social development.
• Conduct assessments, crisis management, goal setting, and transition plan meetings.
• Monitor progress with check-ins and proactive outreach to students.
• Maintain records and summary reports of student interactions and referrals.
• Serve as GSP liaison and provide support, advocacy, and referrals to academic services.
• Develop, implement, and assess trauma-informed programming for students.
• Collaborate with foster youth programs and community partners.
• Attend conferences and stay informed on policy developments affecting foster youth.
• Inform Guardian Scholars staff of new policies impacting foster youth.
• Assist graduates with post-graduation housing, employment and graduate school plans.
• Support recruitment, training, and supervision of student employees and interns.
