Job summary

The Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is recruiting for a Group Supervisor 3 at the Summit View Youth Center in Las Vegas, NV. Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, social work, sociology, counseling and guidance, human services, social services, education, criminal justice or closely related field and one year of experience working with youth in a custodial, employment program, therapeutic, educational, recreational program or correctional setting with responsibility for performing vocational assessments, making oral presentations during group sessions and treatment team meetings, and providing vocational and life skills training to juvenile offenders; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience as described above; OR one year as a Group Supervisor II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the activities of youths within assigned unit
• Directly observe work habits, social behavior, and attitude to ensure conduct meets established rules and regulations of the institution
• Provide assistance and direction to youths in the performance of assignments, acceptable behavior, proper dress and personal hygiene
• Participate as a member of a treatment team to implement a treatment plan
• Document progress or problems in youths’ development.
• Conduct intake interviews
• Review case history file and complete required intake forms and documents concerning personal and medical history and family data
• Interview youths and document personality traits and functioning levels
• Supply immediate needs such as clothing, supplies and room assignment
• Orient and instruct youths in unit rules and regulations
• Conduct physical search of persons and possessions for unauthorized articles and contraband
• Perform security checks of assigned unit to ensure safety and security of residents and the facility
• Conduct head counts and room and body searches
• Check locks on windows and doors
• Secure the location of residents to prevent escape and detect the presence of controlled substances, contraband, or weapons
• Document actions and inform supervisor of abnormalities
• Respond to emergency situations such as searching for runaway youths and applying first aid
• Implement appropriate verbal, behavioral or physical interventions to control youth displaying aggressive, hostile or violent behavior according to established laws, policies and procedures

The Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is recruiting for a Group Supervisor 3 position located at the Summit View Youth Center (SVYC) in Las Vegas, NV. SVYC is a 48-bed staff secure facility for male youth ages 14 to 20. Summit View Youth Center (SVYC) is looking for highly motivated individuals who can guide youthful offenders on way to redirect their behaviors into pro-social channels, while assisting youth in managing their behavior by emphasizing pro-social behavior, coaching and counseling. Under direction a Group Supervisor provides for the care, welfare, custody, and rehabilitation of juvenile offenders within a secure state facility on an assigned shift. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to learn and apply psychological principles and techniques applicable to the care and rehabilitation of justice involved youth, make rational decisions, and work well under pressure. They should communicate effectively both orally and written, exemplify behavior youth can emulate, motivate and counsel youth individually and in groups and provide support and control as needed. As well as maintaining professional demeanor particularly when dealing with abusive or hostile juveniles and de-escalate violent behavior and participate in physically restraining violent and assaultive youth when necessary. All Group Supervisors must work, holidays, evenings, weekends, and overtime as established by policy.

Group Supervisors perform duties involving the education, employment, training, treatment, care and custody of juvenile offenders residing within a State Youth Training Center; maintain comprehensive records of assigned youths’ program activities; and provide individual guidance pursuant to State or federal laws and regulations.

Under limited supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties in the series concept and participate as a member of a treatment team by assisting in the formulation and evaluation of a treatment plan and making recommendations on alternative treatment methods. Additionally, Group Supervisor III’s coordinate and oversee group and individual treatment sessions; develop session goals, rules and content using prescribed methods; document group and individual treatment and activities; and prepare individual progress summary reports for review by the treatment team, committing judge, parole officer, legal guardian, and institutional staff. This is the advanced journey level in the series.
