Job description

Group Exercise Instructor – Division of Athletics and Recreation

The Division of Athletics and Recreation at Brown University is seeking a qualified Group Exercise Instructor to provide excellent instruction in a variety of health/fitness formats including Pilates, Barre, mind/body style classes, and breathwork classes. The instructor will promote the Division’s mission to advance healthy lifestyle choices through participation opportunities, educational experiences and supportive services.

Responsibilities
  • Develop positive relationships with program participants by teaching a variety of challenging and motivating group fitness formats.
  • Enforce policy and procedure of Dance Studios, Nelson Fitness Center and Group Fitness Program.
  • Create safe and effective program design.
  • Organize studio after each Group Exercise class.
  • Promote Brown Group Fitness promotions, programs, services, and special events.
  • Motivate Recreation members to continue involvement with programs and services.
Required Certifications and Experience
  • Minimum of one fitness instructor certification from ACSM, ACE, AFAA, NASM, or NSCA.
  • 200‑Hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT200) or equivalent 200‑Hour Yoga Certification through an accredited institution.
  • IBBFA or similar Barre certification through an accredited institution.
  • Spinning® by Mad Dogg Athletics or similar certification through an accredited institution.
  • Satisfactory interview/audition demonstrating appropriate safety cues, modifications, progressions, and outstanding presentation skills.
  • One to two years of relevant experience teaching group fitness or small‑group training preferred.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED Certification (or training/certification course on‑site).
  • Agree to work nights, weekends and substitute when needed.
  • Maintain active certifications throughout employment.
Additional Requirements
  • All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; duties must be performed in compliance with NCAA, Ivy League rules, and any violations reported to the compliance office.
  • Coaching positions must receive annual rules education on NCAA legislation related to recruiting by the compliance office.
  • All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check and education verification satisfactory to Brown.
