Job Description
The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for presenting a positive and competent image of the Old Colony Y through quality fitness programs designed to meet the needs of the community. Well prepared, relevant, safe, and effective programming will be taught in a professional manner, resulting in friendly, convenient, and courteous service. The instructor will create and implement high-level fitness routines that combine current trends with established choreography to ensure a safe, healthy, and constructive environment for all participants.
Requirements
- Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and recognized Group Fitness certifications.
- Compile program records including attendance, questionnaires, evaluations, and incident reports.
- Assist with promotional activities such as open houses, demonstrations, and health fairs.
- Be prepared to teach new routines at the start of each session.
- Ensure a safe and healthy environment for exercise.
- Arrive early to greet participants, answer questions, and address concerns.
- Dress appropriately and arrive prepared with music cued and routines planned.
- Learn participants' names and share educational information during classes.
- Teach classes with energy and enthusiasm, motivating participants.
- Help new participants feel comfortable and keep up-to-date with fitness trends.
- Arrange substitutes when unable to teach and record accordingly.
- Exceed member expectations and handle concerns promptly.
- Enforce class rules regarding age, footwear, lateness, etc.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and ensure proper registration and payment.
- Maintain a clean and safe class environment, inspect equipment weekly, and report repairs.
- Participate in inter-divisional activities and contribute positively to the work environment.
- Participate in the annual Strong Kids Campaign.

Minimum Requirements
- At least 18 years old, High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and Group Fitness certifications.
- Attend YMCA health and fitness workshops when available.
- Be in excellent physical condition, able to lift 45 pounds, and develop routines independently.
- Flexible with hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Extensive practical experience or YMCA Exercise Instructor I certification; certification through ACE, ACSM, or similar within one year.
- Aware of exercise distress signs, with adequate vision and hearing.
