Job summary

Duke Energy in Charlotte, NC, is seeking an Engineer I – Groundwater (Environmental) for in-person/hybrid work. The role supports regulatory compliance and technical groundwater/landfill management at generating facilities across the Carolinas.

Responsibilities include permitting, data evaluation, modeling, and reporting; collaboration with authorities; and ongoing development of environmental programs. Travel 5–15% is required, with relocation assistance provided as applicable.

Qualifications

• Must have a B.S. in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
• Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Provide regulatory compliance support for generating facilities.
• Provide technical expertise in groundwater and landfill management.
• Landfill permitting, day-to-day compliance support, siting support, compliance reporting and closure plan development.
• Groundwater hydrogeologic investigation, data evaluation, monitoring well siting, modeling and remediation.
• Prepare and review environmental reports and calculations related to groundwater compliance and industrial waste landfills.
• Serve as subject-matter expert for basic technical program and compliance issues; support company environmental goals, develop and maintain procedures and programs to assist facilities in compliance with environmental laws.
• Track regulatory changes, legislative activities and industry standards and assist with identifying needed changes to facility compliance programs.
• Work with federal, state and local authorities to interpret regulations and laws.
• Prepare, submit and negotiate permits and permit renewals with authorities.
• Communicate permit requirements to facilities, update facility plans and documents.
• Support work-unit goals and enhance company reputation through effective planning, scheduling of environmental work activities, and projects.
• Continuously develop and improve technical knowledge and skills.
