Walla Walla County is seeking a Groundskeeper/Facilities Maintenance Technician I to maintain county grounds and facilities, perform cleaning, and support indoor and outdoor tasks. The role reports to the Facilities Manager and requires physical stamina and ability to work independently and as part of a team.

This position encompasses both indoor and outdoor responsibilities focused on maintenance, cleaning, and the upkeep of grounds and facilities. The employee will execute daily maintenance tasks independently, while collaborating with colleagues on larger projects and special assignments as directed. Supervision is provided by the department Facilities Manager, who sets duties and schedules for this role. The Groundskeeper / Facilities Maintenance Technician ensures county grounds, buildings, and public spaces are maintained in a safe, clean, and attractive condition year-round. Duties include groundskeeping and landscape maintenance during spring, summer, and fall, and custodial and facility support during winter or when grounds activity is reduced. The employee operates both autonomously and as part of a team to uphold the safety, functionality, and welcoming nature of county properties for staff and the public.
Work will be performed indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. Employee must be able to climb ladders, lift up to fifty (50) pounds, bend, reach, walk, and stand for extended periods of time in completing tasks related to the job duties. Employee may be required to use and wear safety equipment including but limited to: gloves, glasses, shoes and/or other protection as needed for the working condition, environment or cleaning element. Employee must have the physical strength to withstand strain of performing repetitive manual tasks for an extended period.
High School Diploma or equivalent required. At least three (3) years education and/or training in maintenance and the knowledge and abilities listed in the above section. Ten (10) years' experience or any combination of experience in landscaping, irrigation, chemical application in fertilizers and weed control, pruning and plant knowledge.
Must successfully pass a background check and a driving record check. Must successfully pass a fingerprinting test. Employees are required to have and maintain a valid driver's license and have a driving record that is acceptable to the county insurance carrier. Must be a self-starter and work well independently to complete job duties and required tasks while adhering to guidelines, policy and procedure set by Walla Walla County. May be required to be on call during non-working hours (additional compensation applies).
