Job summary

Meredith College seeks a dedicated grounds maintenance staff member to help keep the campus clean, beautiful, and safe. You will work with the grounds team to maintain lawns, walkways, parking lots, and outdoor spaces.

The role requires physical effort, ability to lift heavy objects, and experience with lawn care equipment. High school diploma or GED is required, and prior grounds maintenance experience is essential.

This is an on-site, essential position supporting campus operations year-round.

General Purpose of Position

Position is responsible for the routine care and maintenance of a clean, beautiful and safe campus environment. Works in concert with the grounds team to maintain and enhance the function and aesthetics of the campus grounds. Position is classified as essential personnel under college policy and is subject to college and department policies regarding essential personnel. Performs essential duties as identified by management and incident response team related to inclement or hazardous weather events.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Removes unsightly trash and debris from public areas by regularly inspecting grounds, and collection areas for waste; raking, sweeping and bagging leaves, debris, dirt, and trash from sidewalks, parking lots, and roads
• Transports waste and recycling to designated collection points on a daily basis
• Routinely clears of sidewalks, entrances, courtyards, campus roads and parking lots using gas powered blowers
• Routinely services hallway recycling and exterior recycling stations; monitors, collects, transports and properly disposes of campus recyclables
• Assists in the routine maintenance of athletic fields and facilities
• Assists in the repair of brick sidewalks, road signs, parking lots and campus roads surfaces
• Performs snow and storm related campus clean up, removing debris and snow from sidewalks, parking lots, and building entrances to ensure safe conditions for students, faculty and staff
• May be required to work during campus closures
• Performs other related duties as necessary or as assigned by supervisor

Skills Needed

• Must be skilled in the performance of grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, edging, string-trimming, hedge-trimming, leaf and trash removal
• Must be able to communicate well and work harmoniously with others

• High school diploma or GED
• Grounds and landscape maintenance experience is required

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

• The nature of the working environment may produce moderate levels of stress and involves discomfort and/or risk such as operating gas powered equipment, heavy machinery and dangerous cutting equipment.
• Workers are subject to environmental discomfort such as frequent exposure to loud noises, and/or extremes of heat or cold
• The work frequently requires wearing protective gear that may be uncomfortable
• Must be able to perform strenuous work that involves frequent exertion and/or periods of continuous machine operation
• Frequent lifting of objects over 50 pounds. Occasional lifting of heavy objects weighing 75 pounds or more is required
