Job summary

Responsibilities

• Operate power equipment for campus grounds maintenance, including fields, golf course, and gardens.

• Picks up trash and debris from campus grounds and removes it by approved methods.
• Mow lawns, trim around beds, walls, walks, and edges.
• Plant new landscapes and renovate existing areas per plans.
• Apply fertilizers and pesticides, water lawns, and maintain irrigation as needed.
• Maintain safety and cleanliness of grounds, roads, and walkways.

Responsibilities

The incumbent operates various power equipment used in themaintenance of campus grounds, gardens, sports fields, golf course,and to assure the upkeep of the University. Assist with trainingand oversight of other crew members in the completion of assignedmaintenance duties. Picks up trash and debris from Universitygrounds, parking areas, walks, streets, sports fields, ditches,culverts, and catch basins. Collects and removes debris and trashfrom campus and disposes of such through approved methods. Cutslawns, trims and edges around walks, curbs, planting beds, andwalls using appropriate grounds maintenance tools. Plants newlandscape areas and renovates existing areas according topre-approved plans. Waters lawns and plant materials, appliesfertilizers. Sprays herbicides and pesticides mechanical and powersprayers. Rakes and removes leaves; cleans drainage ditches,culverts, and catch basins. Cleans building exteriors, entrances,and campus pavement areas using brooms, sweepers, power washers,and blowers/vacuums. Sweeps and cleans streets; removes snow, ice,and debris from streets and walks as required. Prunes shrubs,ground cover, ornamental grasses, and trees. Assists the GroundsSupervisor with modification and repair of irrigation PVC pipe andsprinkler heads. Patches holes in asphalt parking and driveways.Marks sports fields, paints parking striping and crosswalks.Maintains the grounds, athletic fields, and golf course inacceptable manner according to DSU and industry standards.

Qualifications

Ability to read, write, speak, and execute written and oralinstructions. Ability to effectively maintain the Universitygrounds and landscape with minimal oversight. Ability to operatemaintenance and construction equipment including various types oftractors, skid loader, commercial mowers including zero-turnmowers, reel mowers, aerial lifts, line trimmers, edgers, blowers,tillers, street sweeper, roller/packer, verticutter, power washers,pesticide sprayers including power spraying equipment with booms,pruning equipment including chain saws and power pruners, paintstriping machine, plate compactor, as well as typical maintenancehand tools. Ability to operate fertilizer spreader and golf/utilitycarts. Ability to back lap and adjust reel mowers. Ability tosafety operate trucks and vans with trailers in tow and navigatesafely through campus streets and narrow driveways. Must be able tolift a minimum of 80 pounds, climb ladders, work in tight spacesincluding trenches, and work outdoors in temperature and weatherextremes.Must be able to read, write, speak and understand oral andwritten instructions. Must have a High School degree or GED. Musthave a valid US driver's license and be insurable under DSUinsurance carrier.A minimum of 18 months of directly relatedgrounds maintenance experience is preferred.
