Groundskeeper II

Job Summary

The Groundskeeper II maintains campus landscapes to ensure a clean, healthy, and visually appealing environment. This role involves mowing, pruning, planting, seasonal preparation of vegetation, treating areas for pests and weeds, operating and maintaining specialized equipment, and instructing other staff on pesticide use.

Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain campus vegetation, including mowing, pruning, trimming, staking trees and shrubs, and detailing flowerbeds.
• Keep campus grounds clean by removing trash, debris, and refuse.
• Prepare grounds for seasonal changes by pruning trees/bushes and applying fertilizer.
• Adhere to strict safety standards and practices.
• Treat vegetation for insects and remove weeds using pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals.
• Excavate holes and trenches for installation of lights, sprinklers, and other equipment.
• Remove debris from mulched areas and flowerbeds.
• Plant seeds, bulbs, flowers, shrubs, trees, and other vegetation in designated areas.
• Repair and adjust tools, machinery, and equipment.
• Operate specialized equipment such as skid‑steer loaders, tractors, backhoes, front‑end loaders, dump trucks, and aerial lift trucks.
• Acquire and store pesticide solutions; mix or dilute specified chemicals or materials according to directions and apply them as recommended.
• Instruct groundskeepers, as required, in applying sprays, dusts, and other materials.
• Support the mission of the University and serve as an ambassador of service excellence.
• Respond to customer needs in a timely and courteous manner.
• Assist with special events, including setup, event security, and cleanup.
• Build and maintain constructive work relationships with co‑workers, supervisors, and customers.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Prior experience operating equipment including skid‑steer loaders, tractors, backhoes, front‑end loaders, dump trucks, and aerial lift trucks.
• Demonstrated experience in the grounds industry with considerable knowledge of common practices, tools, equipment, and materials.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to execute multiple tasks according to specifications.
• Strong professional integrity and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
• Ability to use good judgment and think critically.

Physical Demands
