Job summary

Sinclair Community College is seeking a Groundskeeper II to maintain campus grounds, evaluate exterior conditions, and manage irrigation, safety, and aesthetics across the grounds. The role includes operating equipment, preparing for winter conditions, and supervising part-time and student staff.

You will perform turf care, sidewalk maintenance, irrigation repairs, and record keeping of chemical applications and inventory.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • 2–3 years landscape maintenance experience.
  • Public Operator license for pesticide application in turf and ornamentals; bi-annual recertification.
  • Strong communication and safety awareness are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Provide turf care including mowing, edging, trimming, and fertilizer/pesticide applications.
  • Maintain sidewalks and concrete pavers; perform snow removal and deicing; sweep and repair as needed.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems; diagnose and troubleshoot system operation.
  • Operate and maintain Grounds Department equipment (tractors, mowers, loaders, backhoe, truck, sprayer, forklift).
  • Inspect campus grounds for trash; perform cleanup and litter removal.
  • Maintain shrub beds, groundcover, flowerbeds and trees (fertilizing, weed control, pest control, mulching, pruning).
  • Supervise student and part-time employees; keep records of chemical applications and inventories.
  • Other duties such as holiday lighting, wildlife control, recycling, and trash hauling.

Job description

The Sinclair Groundskeeper II is responsible for maintaining the campus grounds and landscaping. This position will evaluate exterior conditions, which include all horticultural material, streets, sidewalks, signs, irrigation, banners, pavers, general appearance, safety conditions and planning or redesigning elements that would enhance the appearance of the campus. The Groundskeeper II provides general preventative and scheduled maintenance of all equipment relating to the Grounds Department. This position performs snow removal and deicing on campus during inclement weather conditions. The Groundskeeper II works with and supervises part-time and student employees.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provide turf care to include mowing, edging, trimming, fertilizer applications, herbicide applications and insecticide applications
  • Maintain all pedestrian sidewalks and concrete pavers in a safe clean manner to include snow removal and deicing, and sweeping of sidewalks as well as emergency repairs as necessary
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems to include diagnosing and troubleshooting systems and operation of computerized control system
  • Operate and maintain all equipment in the Grounds Department to include tractors, mowers, front end loaders, backhoe, truck, sprayer, forklift, utility vehicles and rental equipment
  • Inspect campus grounds for trash to include emptying trash receptacles, picking up trash and general cleanup
  • Provide maintenance of all shrub beds, groundcover beds, flowerbeds and trees on campus to include fertilizing, weed control, pest control, mulching and pruning
  • Supervision of student and part time employees
  • Keep accurate records of all chemical applications, equipment maintenance and inventories of supplies
  • Other duties as assigned to include but not limited to; holiday lighting display installation and removal, wildlife control, recycling and building trash hauling

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 2-3 years of work experience in landscape maintenance, garden center sales or related experience required
  • Must possess (or be able to obtain) a valid Ohio Department of Agriculture Public Operator License for pesticide application in turf and ornamentals
    • Bi-annual recertification is required to maintain licensure
  • Proficiency in irrigation system troubleshooting and diagnostics required, gained through 2-3 years of hands-on experience or completion of an Irrigation Service School program preferred
  • Strong daily communication skills required to effectively interact with employees, students, contractors, and customers required
  • Knowledge of plant materials, insects and disease identification required
  • Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and insurability by College’s insurance provider required
