Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Administration Facility Management Division seeks a Grounds Supervisor I (S) to plan and manage grounds work, supervise staff as needed, and oversee landscape maintenance at 431 North Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC. You will plant, prune, and maintain shrubs, trees, and lawns, and assist in equipment repairs.

Minimum education includes a high school diploma or GED with three years of grounds upkeep experience.

About Us

The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction, purchasing and contracting for goods and services, maintaining facilities, managing state vehicles, acquiring and disposing of real property, and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally, the department manages many of the state's advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the state's population that have been traditionally underserved.

Description of Work

The North Carolina Department of Administration Facility Management Division is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and skilled Grounds Supervisor I responsible for development and landscape maintenance of grounds, to include planning work efforts, assigning staff, and reviewing work. This position will not have any direct reports, but at times will be required to supervise full-time employees, temporary employees, and inmate workers.

Key Responsibilities

• Ability to plan and manage the work.
• Preparing for and planting shrubs, trees, flowers, and lawns.
• Installing hardened landscape structures.
• Implementing scheduled landscape maintenance.
• Diagnosing diseased shrubs, trees, flowers, and lawns and taking remedial action.
• Assisting in repair of landscape equipment.
• Maintaining beds including pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and spraying of plant material.
• Requires the use of special tools for cultivation, maintenance and transportation of plants and repair of landscape equipment.
• Applying chemicals and water to plants, turf, or plant collection.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

• Considerable knowledge of the horticultural practices and techniques applicable to the layout and upkeep of formal gardens and grounds.
• Considerable knowledge of ornamental shrubs, plants, and flowers and their uses in landscape work.
• Ability to adjust and make minor mechanical repairs to equipment such as tractors, mowers, disks, and rakes.
• Ability to supervise and maintain effective working relationships with crew and other grounds personnel.

Recruitment Range: $33,902-$47,615
