Job summary

Overview

The Campus Services Department invites applications for a GroundsSupervisor. The Grounds Supervisor plans and assigns work, overseesthe daily activities of the grounds crew, and exercises independentjudgment in prioritizing tasks, resolving operational issues, andensuring work is completed efficiently and in accordance withestablished standards.

Responsibilities
  • Assigns work to grounds crew; reviews job performance byobserving and critiquing work techniques and completedassignments.
  • Trains crew in the work involving landscaping and maintenanceof grounds.
  • Cleans, repairs, and services all equipment used in groundsmaintenance such as mowers, tractor/trailers, dump trucks,front-end loaders, high-lift fork trucks, wood chippers, snowplows, salt spreaders, and a variety of hand/power tools.
  • Plants and trims lawns, trees, bushes, hedges, annuals, andshrubs using hand tools or motorized vehicles.
  • Landscapes new ground areas, repairs damaged ground areas,replaces bushes, hedges, shrubs, and trees.
  • Cares for and maintains color beds. Produces and cares fornursery stock; fertilizes soil when needed for plant growth; plantsflowerbeds.
  • Applies herbicide and pesticide chemicals to grounds, trees,bushes, shrubs, and lawns in order to control weeds, fungus, plantdiseases and insects.
  • Orders supplies for all aspects of groundskeeping; e.g.,equipment parts, blades, herbicides, pesticides, flowers, bushes,or trees.
  • Drives vehicles such as a car, truck, or van to pick upsupplies and materials.
Working Conditions
  • Job requires the ability to work outside in all weatherconditions, with excessive dust or dirt.


Physical Requirements
  • Job requires standing for long periods of time.
  • Job requires walking for long periods of time on differenttypes of terrain.
  • Job may require bending, lifting, and climbing.
Specific duties and responsibilities may vary based upondepartmental needs. Other duties may be assigned similar to theabove consistent with the knowledge, skills and abilities requiredfor the job.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience as a laborer, farmer, gardener, floristhelper, groundskeeper, or similar work involving general laborerduties which may include the planting and maintenance ofvegetation, landscaping duties, nursery inspections, or pesticideapplications.
  • Valid Driver’s License

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of soils and turf grass management.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform general maintenance onequipment
  • Ability to understand and use hand tools, climb ladders,operate mowers, tractors, forklifts, aerifiers, top dressers, andvertical mowers
  • Ability to use computers with general knowledge of usingspreadsheet software for logging applications and inventorymanagement
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, efficient individual
  • Flexible individual with the ability to work independently andas part of a collaborative team
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds and sustain theweight of a backpack blower for an extended period of time
  • Ability to follow directions and adhere to schedules
  • Ability to maintain a professional and respectfuldemeanor/attitude with coaching staff, coworkers, students,athletes, fans, and vendors
  • Ability to engage effectively with others of diverse culturesor backgrounds
  • Ability to work a non-standard work week, which may includeevenings, weekends, and holidays to support campus needs.
