Job summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia’s Dept of Veterans Services invites applications for a Grounds Worker at the Davis & McDaniel Vet Care Center. This day-shift, part-time position (up to 29 hours per week) supports maintenance of the property and facilities.

You'll perform lawn care, planting, pruning, snow/ice removal, minor repairs, equipment operation, and routine inspections, with duties expanding to patching drywall and painting as needed.

Qualifications

• Two years experience in general maintenance/grounds keeping.
• Must pass criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening; two TB tests required.

Responsibilities

• Work day shift up to 29 hours per week.
• Maintain appearance of driveway and DMVCC property.
• Assist in removal of snow and ice from walks, driveways and entrances.
• Inspect lawn, flowers, shrubs and trees for evidence of pests and apply controls.
• Plant seeds and bulbs, trees and shrubs; weed and prune as needed.
• Dig up and store bulbs and roots or mulch beds for protection and appearance.
• Connect sprinkling equipment and water lawns, shrubbery and flowerbeds.
• Operate all lawn equipment.
• Apply pesticides and maintain application records/logs.
• Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in clean, safe condition.
• Make routine repairs to equipment; refer major problems to department Director.
• Patch/repair drywall and assist with room painting; install fixtures as needed.
• Perform routine building checks; assist in other maintenance tasks as required.
• Be prepared to assist agency or state government during emergencies.
