Job summary

Virginia.gov is seeking a Groundskeeper at the Sitter-Barfoot Veterans Care Center to perform landscape and grounds maintenance, including lawn and plant care, irrigation support, and routine repairs. The role requires reliable, independent work in a skilled maintenance environment within a state veterans facility.

The position works in the Maintenance Department to sustain a safe, clean, and welcoming campus for residents and visitors, with essential duties during emergencies and flexible

• Experience in light maintenance repairs (bulbs, filters, etc).

Responsibilities

• Keep the property free of leaves and debris.
• Maintain outside trash cans.
• Maintain all interior plants.
• Inspect lawn, flowers, shrubs and trees for pests and take appropriate control actions.
• Weed and thin flowerbeds.
• Connect sprinkler equipment and water lawns, shrubs and beds.
• Maintain tools and keep work areas clean, safe and orderly.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Department.

Job Duties

Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center; named for two Medal of Honor recipients – Colonel Van Barfoot and Colonel Carl Sitter – provides the gold standard in quality care for Virginia’s Veterans. This single-level facility features 200 single-occupancy rooms across four nursing units.

• Keeping the property free of leaves and debris
• Maintaining outside trash cans
• Maintaining all interior plants
• Inspecting the lawn, flowers, shrubs, and trees for evidence of insects, fungi, and/or other pests, and taking appropriate measures for effective control and maintenance
• Weeding and thinning flowerbeds
• Connecting sprinkler equipment and watering lawns (to include shrubbery and flowerbeds)
• Maintaining tools, equipment, and keeping work areas in a clean, safe and orderly condition
• Performing other duties as assigned within the Maintenance Department's mission and to meet the overall needs of the facility

This position is considered essential personnel and would be required to work in the event of an emergency, pandemic or facility need. This position participates in the rotating On Call schedule in the Maintenance Department.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
• Experience in lawn care, and associated grounds maintenance
• Ability to work independently, to plan assigned work, select and gather necessary materials, tools and equipment for maximum efficiency and compliance with codes and regulations
• Experience in light maintenance repairs (light bulb, filter replacement etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working at a long term care facility or health facility.

• Successful completion of a background criminal history check, FBI fingerprint-based background and pre-employment drug test are required.
