Job summary

Boys Town in Omaha, NE, is seeking a dedicated Groundskeeper to maintain and beautify our grounds and facilities. You will participate in production, maintenance, and clean-up of outdoor spaces, garden plots, and habitat areas, using mowers, tractors, and boom truck as needed.

Qualifications

Job description

Maintains grounds and facilities. Operates heavy machinery to accomplish duties of the job.SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 6:30a-3:00p. On-call as neededMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:Participates in the production, maintenance, and clean-up of grounds and facilities.Maintains plot garden areas, including tilling, planting, and fertilizing; may plan and order supplies for produce gardens.Maintains landscaped areas, flower beds, and interior plants, and assists with habitat and lake maintenance and with greenhouse operations.Maintains fruit tree and orchard production including pruning trees for proper growth and repair and removes hazardous trees and limbs.Controls growth of unwanted species of weeds and grass by weeding, cultivating, and trimming; identifies the need for, applies, maintains, and properly disposes of chemical pesticide.Operates grounds maintenance equipment including zero turn and large area mowers, tractors, front end loaders, and chainsaws from the basket of a boom truck; drives Boys Town vehicle as needed to complete duties of the job.Maintains equipment, including sharpening blades, replacing belts and bearings, and completing tune ups.Prunes trees for proper growth and removes trees as needed.Performs general building maintenance and removes snow, ice, and other debris as needed; utilizes plow, loader, blade, blower and shovel.Supervises youth grounds and landscaping projects and activities as needed.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of a broad range of landscaping practices, techniques, tools, equipment, and safety procedures. Knowledge of an extensive variety of regional plant life and livestock.Ability to identify weeds and lawn diseases and determine proper application of chemicals.Skills in installation and maintenance of landscaping plants and materials.Ability to communicate productively and to organize assigned tasks for completion.Ability to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Previous experience in grounds maintenance or agriculture required.Minimum 18 years of age required.Possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record required.Pass an annual Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) check required..On-call (continuously or rotationally) to provide support. Available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays if needed required.State of Nebraska certified pesticide and herbicide applicator license is required within 90 days of hire required.Certified in-house, post-hire to operate boom truck, forklift, and front-end loader required.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.Other Duties: This job description incorporates the essential functions and duties required for this position. However, other duties may be required and assigned at times and as determined by a supervisor in order to meet the needs of the organization.Serves as a role model in carrying out activities and behaviors that reflect the values and principles of the Boys Town mission.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, EQUIPMENT USAGE, WORK ENVIRONMENT:Moderate to very heavy physical work, occasionally having to lift up to 70 pounds without assistance and in excess of 100 pounds with assistance. Walking, standing, reaching, bending, digging, and may be required to work at heights of 10 feet or more. The worker is subject to both indoor and outdoor conditions in temperatures below freezing and above 100 degrees for extended periods of time.
