Job summary

Responsibilities

Position Summary

Winston-Salem State University is seeking a dedicated and motivated Grounds/Landscape Worker to join our Facilities Management team. The primary purpose of this position is to provide comprehensivegroundskeeping and landscaping services, including trash andrecycling support, across the university’s campus. This roleensures the upkeep, beauty, and safety of our university groundsthrough skilled landscape maintenance and customer-focusedservice.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform maintenance and landscaping tasks such as mowing lawns,trimming hedges, pruning trees, and planting shrubs, flowers,grass, and trees.
  • Water and fertilize plants and lawns; apply weed controlsolutions as necessary.
  • Clear campus grounds, walkways, and roads of leaves, debris,snow, and ice.
  • Patch roads and driveways and assist in installing campussignage.
  • Use powered groundskeeping equipment and hand tools safely andefficiently.
  • Perform minor repairs and routine preventative maintenance onlandscape equipment.
  • Participate in moving, hauling, and special event set-upsacross campus.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors tocomplete work assignments.
  • Listen and respond promptly and respectfully to customer anddepartmental needs.
  • Follow instructions carefully and ask clarifying questions toensure tasks are completed accurately.

Knowledge—Technical: General knowledge of the landscape trade andskills in the use of equipment and tools of the trade. Workingknowledge of the cultivation, pruning, spraying, and trimmingrequirements of shrubs and trees. Ability to make minor repairs tolawnmowers, hose, rakes, pruners and sprayers. Ability to moverelatively heavy objects and to work at heavy manual tasks forconsiderable periods of time.

Mows and trims lawns and shrubberies to a height using hand andpower trimmers, and performs other grounds keeping tasks asrequested. Performs skilled work in the planting, cultivation, andcare of shrubs, trees, plants, and grass. Responsible formaintaining grounds and shrubs in good condition. Recognizesgrounds maintenance needs and communicates to lead person orsupervisor.

Plant shrubs, flowers, grass and trees as appropriate to enhancethe campus landscape. Water flowers and plants as required. Removeleaves, paper and other debris from the campus landscape, walks,and drives. Remove snow and ice from campus walks, drives andstreets as required.

Perform moving and hauling and special set-up functions asrequired. Patch campus roads and drives when instructed.
