Job summary

Cornell University in Ithaca is seeking a Grounds Worker S04 to perform landscape maintenance and construction tasks, report hazards, and support a safe, efficient campus environment.

The role requires a high school diploma, a valid US driver’s license, at least two years in landscape work, and the ability to work extended hours, including nights and weekends, in all weather. Union affiliation applies; pay is hourly with union rates.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid US motor vehicle operator license required.
• Minimum of two years’ experience with landscape maintenance, landscape construction, or related field.
• Experience in a fast paced commercial or residential landscaping environment.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in landscaping.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse range of people.
• Teamwork and customer service orientation are essential.
• Ability to work independently with initiative and problem solving.

Responsibilities

• Performs manual labor for general landscape maintenance and /or landscape construction tasks, including turf maintenance, plant maintenance, litter control, snow removal, and other duties
• Promptly reports unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape, equipment, or facilities
• Subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow emergencies
• Subject to shift changes and extended working hours to meet seasonal work demand, including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays
• May encounter sewage and dead animals
• Regular exposure to bees and pollen
• This position is covered by the UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement
• At the end of the probationary period employees will be required to pay union dues
