JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Grounds Keeper
Salary Grade: NC01 – NC03
Salary Range (monthly): 2,600 – 4,338
Employment Status: Full Time, 12 Month, classified, non-exempt.
Summary: Under general supervision, assists in grounds maintenance and landscaping functions at facilities of the school system to improve appearance. Work involves the responsibility for safe efficient operation of motorized equipment such as mowers, edgers, and other types of power equipment. Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned duties. Reports to Assistant Maintenance Director.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Cut grass, trim trees and bushes.
- Check and make minor repairs to maintenance equipment.
- Maintain playground equipment.
- Check outside of facilities for cleanliness and safety.
- Install and maintain impact surface around playground equipment.
- Assist with demolition and renovation projects as needed.
- Assist with pulling cable when necessary.
- Assist with site improvement projects and /or drainage issues such as water and sewer utilities, road and pavement repairs.
- Trim and edge around walks, flower beds and walls.
- Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches or twigs.
- Clean grounds of remove litter.
- Shovel snow from walks and driveways.
- Spread salt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup.
- Repair fences, gates, walls and walks.
- Maintain irrigation systems and ensure proper water management.
- Clean out drainage ditches and culverts.
- Sharpen tools such as weed cutters, edging tools and shears.
- Assist with painting.
- Other related duties assigned by supervisor and Director of Maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from supervisors.
- Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
- Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using hand tools.
- Ability to handle a variety of items such as hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
- Ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words).
- Responsible for the inventory and accountability of material, tools, repair parts and equipment assigned and issued for use.
- Thoroughly familiar with how to operate and maintain assigned work vehicle.
- Able to complete written work orders to turn into Assistant Maintenance Director.
- Able to turn in receipts of purchases to office.
- Gain familiarity with Montgomery County Schools Board of Education policy manual.
Minimum Education, Experience and Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid NC Driver’s License.
- Valid CDL preferred.
- NC Pesticide Operator License, or ability to obtain within 1 calendar year.
- At least two (2) years’ experience in operating a mower, weed eater, hand and electric tools.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- May require limited overtime and very occasional weekend work.
- Use of time clock for attendance tracking.
- Ability to exert over 100LBS occasionally, 50-100LBS frequently; or up to 20-50LBS constantly.
