Job summary

Nash County Public Schools is seeking a Groundskeeper I to maintain school grounds in the Nash County/Nashville area. The role reports to the Director of Maintenance and follows the state salary schedule with routine, supervised tasks.

Expect duties such as mowing, trimming, pruning, planting and general upkeep of grounds. The position requires the ability to perform physical tasks, lift up to 50 lbs, and follow safety rules with some experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Some knowledge of grounds maintenance.
  • Some knowledge of the planting, cultivating, pruning and trimming requirements of flowers, shrubs and trees.
  • Ability to use and sharpen gardening tools.
  • Must have strong communicationsand interpersonal skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the school community
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral or written directions.
  • Successful work experience.

  • Rakes and composts or disposes of leaves.
  • Cleans grounds and removes litter.
  • Shovels snow from walks and driveways.
  • Spreads salt and sand on public passage ways to prevent ice buildup.
  • Plants grass, flowers, trees and shrubs.
  • Waters lawn, shrubs and flowers.
  • Cleans out drainage ditches and culverts.
  • Sharpens tools, such as weed cutters, edging tools and shears.

POSITION: Groundskeeper I

REPORTS TO: Director of Maintenance

SALARY GRADE: State Salary Schedule

NATURE OF WORK An employee in this class uses simple tools to maintain grounds including planting, cultivating, pruning and cutting plants, trees, shrubs, grass and flowers. Assignments are usually routine and repetitive in nature. Detailed instructions are given and problems are referred to a supervisor. Work performance is inspected and evaluated on the basis of grounds appearance and errors are quickly revealed. This employee receives direct supervision.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals consistent with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff and the general public consistent with the duties of this position .

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists consistent with the duties of this position
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form consistent with the duties of this position

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Some knowledge of grounds maintenance.
  • Some knowledge of the planting, cultivating, pruning and trimming requirements of flowers, shrubs and trees.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and depth perception. The employee may have to lift up to 50 lbs.daily.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee continually interacts with the public and staff.

SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Some experience in the care and maintenance of plants, trees, flowers and shrubs is preferred.

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated regularly by the supervisor in accordance with Board Policy .
