Job summary

Brown University in Providence, RI, is seeking a Grounds Fleet Mechanic to repair and maintain grounds-related vehicles and equipment, ensuring safe, reliable campus operations. You will perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and air‑conditioning systems.

Candidates should have a high school diploma, 2–3 years of automotive training or certification, and a valid driver’s license; diesel experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of two to three years of training at an automotive mechanic technical school, or an equivalent professional certification.
• Minimum of five years of experience as a mechanic at a dealership, garage, or equivalent setting.
• Diesel-mechanic experience preferred.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
• Appropriate certification for refrigerant handling must be held or obtained as required by federal law.

Job description

Position Purpose

The Grounds Fleet Mechanic repairs and maintains grounds-related vehicles, machinery, and equipment in support of safe, reliable campus operations. Performs preventive maintenance, diagnostics, fabrication, and mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, emissions, and air-conditioning repairs. Maintains accurate service records, parts and tool inventories, and a clean, safe work area. Performs other related grounds duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

Job Competencies

• General knowledge of vehicle maintenance, diesel systems, and small-engine repair.
• Knowledge of computer-controlled engines, emissions and fuel-injection systems, electronic safety controls, and electronically controlled turbocharged engines.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair electronic modules, circuitry, control boards, and related wiring.
• Knowledge of hydraulic diagnostic systems and the repair of hoses, pumps, motors, cylinders, and valves.
• Ability to service vehicle and equipment air-conditioning systems and handle refrigerants in accordance with federal law.
• Ability to perform oxy-acetylene and arc welding safely.
• Ability to read and interpret parts manuals, sketches, and specifications and to maintain accurate service records.
• Ability to follow University procedures and applicable safety and environmental requirements.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with members of the University community.
• Ability and willingness to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
