JOB TITLE:
Crew Lead (Grounds Maintenance)

Bargaining Unit Status: Grounds Bargaining Unit

FULL-TIME (hours per week): 40 6:30AM-3:30PM M-F with occasional Saturday

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience working as a crew leader or similar work in a position with responsibility for other employees.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions, to give instructions, and to work independently.
  • History of producing quality work in a consistent manner.
  • Must be authorized for coverage under agency insurance if operating agency vehicle, have good driving record, valid Alabama driver’s license, and/or required level of personal auto insurance.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily complete a background check, per company requirements.
  • Listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and maintain confidentiality.
  • Adequate ability in communicating in spoken conversation – adequate volume speech.
  • Ability to effectively build and maintain positive working relationships with management and peers.

POSITIONS SUPERVISED (or Team Lead responsibilities, if applicable):
Team Lead for a work crew.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES SUMMARY:
Responsible for assignment of work, and for productivity, quality, timeliness and completion of work by assigned crew. Ensures safe working procedures and proper use/maintenance of assignment equipment for crew members. Ensures that all services performed are in accordance with contract requirements and company policy, and that work crew maintains a new and professional appearance, and leaves a clean, orderly work area at each job site.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specifics are Outlined in the Performance Work Statement):
  • Make sure crew has all tools and equipment necessary for that days work prior to leaving the shop at the beginning of the shift.
  • Ensure all crew members understand their work requirements and are capable of doing the job. Provide training when needed.
  • Perform all daily and periodic inspections and maintenance tasks on assigned equipment.
  • Ensure all crew members are properly trained on equipment before being allowed to use it. Ensure all equipment is used properly and safely in order to avoid injuries and damage to property. Report any damage or accidents promptly.
  • Work with the crew members and set the pace.
  • Ensure all requirements of the job have been completed and all quality standards have been met before leaving each job site.
  • Ensure work is completed according to schedule. Notify your zone manager if you anticipate any delays.
  • Know all safety rules concerning your equipment and work according to them. Ensure all crew members follow safety rules and procedures, e.g. PPE worn, proper work methods used, and equipment safety devices are in place and operating. Immediately bring any safety issues to the attention of your zone manager.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES RELATED TO THIS POSITION MAY INCLUDE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as required to fulfill customer contract obligations or changes based on customer needs.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to perform work outdoors in all seasons (outdoor work is subject to temperature extremes and inclement weather. Work is expected to continue during light rains).
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power equipment (string trimmers, blowers, chain saws, etc.).
  • Ability to sit and operator a tractor/mower/truck for up to 2 hours at a time on uneven and sometimes rough terrain.
  • Physical stamina to work at least 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to be independently mobile on all surfaces and situations. This positions requires considerable walking for up to 6 to 8 hours per day on uneven and sometimes rough terrain (e.g., outdoor unfinished grounds, lawns, paved/finished surface, and includes up to 45 degrees).
  • Ability to safety retrieve items weighing up to 50 pounds from high and low areas, and ability to safety transport these items from one work area to the next.
  • Ability to work alone for extended periods of time.
  • Adequate hearing required for conversation, telephone use, and emergency information systems.

  • Must be able to analyze many variables and choose the most effective course of action for the organization at any given point in time.
