About the Role

Our client, a key player in the energy sector , is seeking a dedicated Grid Modernization Specialist to join their team in Paarl, Western Cape, ZA . This role is essential for upgrading and optimizing the electrical grid infrastructure to accommodate new technologies, improve reliability, and enhance efficiency. You will be involved in the planning, design, and implementation of smart grid initiatives, including advanced metering, grid automation, and distributed energy resource integration. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in power systems engineering, coupled with an understanding of digital grid technologies and data analytics. Key Responsibilities

Develop strategies and roadmaps for grid modernization initiatives. Plan and oversee the implementation of smart grid technologies, such as SCADA, AMI, and distribution automation. Analyze grid performance data to identify areas for improvement and optimization. Collaborate with engineers, IT specialists, and external vendors on system integration and deployment. Assess the impact of new technologies and distributed energy resources on grid stability and operations. Develop technical specifications and requirements for grid modernization projects. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements related to grid modernization. Provide technical expertise and support to operational teams and other stakeholders. Research and evaluate emerging technologies relevant to grid modernization. Contribute to pilot projects and proof-of-concept deployments in the Western Cape region.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field. Master's degree is a plus. Minimum of 6 years of experience in power systems engineering, with a specialization in grid modernization or smart grid technologies. Strong understanding of grid operations, power system analysis, and control systems. Experience with SCADA systems, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), and data management. Familiarity with communication protocols used in the utility sector (e.g., DNP3, IEC 61850). Knowledge of data analytics and their application in grid management. Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills. Strong communication and presentation abilities, with experience presenting to technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a hybrid setting. Understanding of renewable energy integration challenges and solutions is beneficial.
