Job summary

The University of Washington Department of Biology operates a 20,000-square-foot greenhouse that supports undergraduate instruction, faculty research, public outreach, and the care of diverse living plant collections. The Plant Technician 3 will supervise plant cultivation, support teaching and research, and help ensure high standards of plant health and safety.

Reporting to the Greenhouse Manager, you will train staff, coordinate plant production with schedules, and maintain accurate records

Qualifications

• High school diploma and four years in plant research, incl. managing a major farming operation.
• College training in plant sciences may substitute for experience.
• Experience training and managing staff, students, interns and volunteers.
• Valid Washington State driver’s license by start date.
• Must obtain Washington pesticide applicator license within six months.
• Ability to work one regular weekend day; occasional holidays or events.
• Able to work in warm, humid greenhouse conditions.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and care for crops and plants in UW Biology Greenhouse and interiorscape areas.
• Conduct plant culture activities: watering, fertilizing, pruning, propagation, and health monitoring.
• Assess plant health and adjust cultivation to growth stage and environment.
• Maintain quality, accessibility, appearance, and health of teaching and research collections.
• Train, lead, and direct staff, students, interns, and volunteers in greenhouse practices.
• Coordinate plant production with instructional/research schedules; ensure timely materials.
• Maintain accurate records of nutrition, pesticides, environmental conditions, and treatments.
• Guide demonstrations for students and outreach activities; manage public inquiries.
