Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, natural resource management or related field.
• 0 years of progressively responsible professional experience or equivalent combination.
• Knowledge of pesticides and hazardous materials regulations.
• Ability to operate a PC and use word processing software.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs and work on uneven terrain.

Responsibilities

• Maintains greenhouse plantings including watering, fertilizing, pest and weed control, repotting, labeling, mixing planting media, and inventory.
• Assists collections managers with maintaining and updating data on plant collections using computer-based programs.
• Performs propagation of tropical plants by seeds, cuttings, air layering, grafting, rhizome or corm division.
• Assists in implementing integrated pest management strategies on greenhouse collections.
• Provides horticultural and botanical information and plant identification to Arboretum staff and the public.
• Moves items weighing up to 50 pounds and traverses uneven terrain in inclement weather.
• Assists Horticultural Manager with planning and execution of plant sale events.
• Participates in Arboretum events such as open houses, dedications, and plant sales.
• Gives advice to the public on plant selection and care.
• Assists Grounds and Collections staff with garden maintenance activities.
