Job summary

Michigan State University’s Wheat Breeding and Genetics program is seeking a Research Assistant I to support greenhouse, laboratory, and field research. This role will manage greenhouse and laboratory operations and coordinate experiments for wheat development projects, while assisting with field activities and data collection.

The successful candidate will supervise undergraduate and graduate student employees and help develop SOPs for ongoing research.

Qualifications

• Four-year college degree in Crop and Soil Sciences, Horticulture, Genetics, Genomics or related field.
• 1–3 years of crop/plant science laboratory and greenhouse research experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.
• Michigan Commercial Pesticide license required within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Laboratory and greenhouse responsibilities including startup of equipment, maintaining facilities, and handling DNA/seed processes.
• Plan and develop lab- and greenhouse-based research activities and SOPs for ongoing projects.
• Assist with field research including data collection, inoculation, harvesting, and planting.
• Supervise undergraduate and graduate student employees.
