Job summary

Wood's Market Garden is seeking a Greenhouse Assistant to co-manage five propagation greenhouses alongside the greenhouse manager and farm owner. The role includes seed starting, plug potting, vacuum seeding for vegetables, watering, fertility and pest management, and general duties.

In May, farmstand operations begin with inventory and customer assistance on one day per week. Hours are 24–32 per week, with compensation hourly and benefits like produce and farmstand discounts.

Full-time, seasonal, March through June, or longer if desired

As a Greenhouse Assistant, you will co-manage our farm’s five propagation greenhouses in coordination with the greenhouse manager and farm owner. In our greenhouses we grow both bedding plants and vegetable transplants. Bedding plant production entails starting plants from seed, as well as potting up plugs that we buy in from greenhouse suppliers. The end product of these bedding plants ranges from potted annuals, to hanging baskets, to garden starts, and more. Vegetable transplant production entails starting plants from seed using our vacuum seeder. Other tasks for both include watering, and managing fertility, pests, inventory, and more.

Beginning in May, our farmstand opens for sales to the public, and the greenhouse employees manage plant inventory at the stand, answer questions for customers when needed, and work at the farmstand on one day a week.

Responsibilities can at times be physically demanding, so all candidates must be capable of lifting heavy and awkward items of 40 lbs. or more, performing repetitive tasks with a positive attitude and physical stamina, and able to work in inclement weather as necessary.

• Strong back with the ability to lift heavy and awkward objects and be comfortable spending a full shift on their feet


• Ability to work well in both a team setting and independently


• Fast learner and ability to adapt to new positions and working with new people


• Ability to take direction, accept constructive feedback and to ask for help when needed

Working Hours:

24 – 32 hours / week

Compensation:

This position is hourly with benefits including free produce from the farm and a discount to our farmstand. Wage is commensurate with experience.
