Job summary

WM seeks an experienced diesel technician for a travel-intensive role based in Frankfort, KY. The candidate will troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild major vehicle components, perform PMIs, and mentor other technicians. Strong diagnostic skills and use of vehicle electronic systems are essential.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Four+ years experience as a diesel technician.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL or ability to obtain within 90 days.
  • 3+ ASE Certifications (Brakes, Drive Train, Heat/Vent/AC, Steering Suspension, Elec/Electronic, PMI, Diesel Engines, Natural Gas).
  • Must also become certified in Hydraulics (WMI Class); Transmission (WMI Class), Heavy Equipment (WMI Class) within three weeks of hire.
  • Ability to travel 90% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections and ensures timely, effective repair of problems identified.
  • Proficient inspection, diagnosis and moderately complex repair of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Provides assistance, guidance and direction to other maintenance personnel.
  • Uses vehicle computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes for repairs.
  • Estimates time and material costs on repairs and requisitions new parts.
  • Advices supervisor if additional work is needed or if repairs cannot be completed within Standard Repair Times.
  • Inspects quality of outside/supplier repairs; assesses damage and assigns repairs.
  • Performs service calls for emergency breakdowns.
  • Conducts safety checks; performs maintenance as required.
  • May perform maintenance supervisory duties in absence of supervision.

Job description

I. Job Summary

Performs preventive maintenance inspection (PMI); troubleshoots, repairs, and rebuilds major components on vehicles and equipment. Ensures accurate diagnosis and effective repair and/or replacement of components. May provide guidance and training along with assisting other Technicians as directed by the Fleet Manager.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections and ensures the timely and effective repair of any problems identified during an inspection.

  • Performs proficient inspection, diagnosis and moderately complex repair of assigned vehicles and equipment.

  • Provides assistance, guidance and direction to other maintenance personnel.

  • Utilizes vehicle computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes to initiate or assign repairs.

  • Estimates time and material costs on repairs and requisitions new parts.

  • Advises supervisor immediately if additional work is needed or if repairs cannot be completed within the Standard Repair Times (SRTs).

  • Inspects the quality of outside/supplier repairs and or rebuilds. Assesses structural damage and assigns needed repairs utilizing the most appropriate method(s).

  • Performs service calls for emergency breakdowns.

  • Conducts safety checks on vehicles. Performs maintenance related work as required.

  • In the absence of supervision may provide maintenance supervisory duties.

  • Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate/OSHA Standards, and performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

  • Extensive Travel (minimum of 40 - 47 weeks per year)

  • Ability to work on night shifts, when business needs so require

III. Qualifications

A. Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D

  • Four plus years previous experience as a diesel technician

  • Valid driver’s license, CDL license (or ability to obtain within ninety (90) days)

  • 3 or more ASE Certifications (or the equivalent) among the following: Brakes (T4 ASE), Drive Train (T3 ASE), Heat/Vent/AC (T3 ASE), Steering Suspension (T5 ASE), Elec/Electronic (T6 ASE), PMI (T8 ASE), Diesel Engines (T2 ASE), Natural Gas (F1 ASE). and

  • Must also become certified in the following within three (3) weeks of hire): Hydraulics (WMI Class); Transmission (WMI Class), Heavy Equipment (WMI Class)

  • Ability to travel 90% of the time.

B. Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience,

  • Six plus years previous experience working on heavy equipment and trucks.

  • CNG repair experience a plus.

  • Lead Technician or Sr Technician experience preferred.

Office: This job primarily operates in a professional office environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, etc.

This role is designated as safety sensitive and will require the successful candidate to strictly comply with all safety rules and protocols. As part of the ongoing employment requirements, the successful candidate may be subject to drug and alcohol testing—including pre‑employment screening, post‑incident evaluations, reasonable suspicion checks, and random testing—in accordance with government regulations and company policies.

The expected salary range for this position is $26.00 - $40.00 per hour. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location.
