Job summary

The American Museum of Natural History is seeking a full-time Graphic Designer in the Exhibition department to design graphics for signage, interpretive panels and media support, including for traveling exhibitions.

Responsibilities include developing design strategies, preparing proofs, coordinating with editors and vendors, and assisting production and installation. Minimum qualifications: 2 years as a graphic designer; proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite; familiarity with Microsoft Office.

Qualifications

  • Designing and producing other Museum-related graphics as needed (e.g., donor signage, wayfinding).
  • Coordinating with other graphic designers, 3D designers, editorial, media and vendors.
  • Archiving of graphics for intellectual property package.
  • Reviewing production information, annotating final files with production and installation details and producing reference elevations as needed.
  • Assisting in the production of style guides.

Position Summary

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition.

The Exhibition department is seeking a full-time Graphic Designer. The Graphic Designer designs graphics for the full range of exhibition graphics, including signage, interpretive panels and assistance with media needs. They also provide production support for traveling exhibitions.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Completing graphic design for exhibitions: developing and implementing design strategies, initial sketching, developing ideas, producing elevations, making templates, color testing, laying out graphics and keeping them moving throughout the review process with editorial, production (Illustrator and Photoshop work as needed), reviewing proofs, supervising the install of graphics as needed, producing and mounting temporary graphics when needed.

The expected salary for the Graphic Designer is $55,000/annual - $59,500/annual. This position is overtime-eligible and the AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization, and depth and scope of experience.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years experience working as a graphic designer.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication/organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:
      • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward or outward.
      • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
