The University of Alabama at Birmingham seeks a Grant Management Specialist Lead to oversee the grant development, submission, and management process for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. You will act as a key advisor, ensuring compliance and guiding faculty through both pre- and post-award activities.
This role requires a Bachelor's degree and five years of experience, where you will manage budgets and engage with federal and institutional guidelines to ensure effective grant management.
Serve as a lead and key member of a team of grant advisors responsible for the entire grant development, submission, and management process for departments and their faculty in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM). Build advisor‑scientist relationships with investigators and oversee pre‑award and post‑award research activities for a group of departments within the School of Medicine, ensuring compliance with all research sponsor and UAB guidelines, policies, and regulations. Partner directly with faculty to guide them through the grant development phase and provide guidance for post‑award management, including drafting, managing the grant’s budget, preparing documentation, improving administrative and scientific content, populating the grant submission portal (e.g., ASSIST, myUABresearch), and completing the grant’s initial and final submission to the UAB Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) as well as annual progress reports.
Act as an advisor reporting to the Manager—Grants Management Shared Services—HSOM, identify, review and make determinations on current funding opportunity announcements and their applicability to investigators, create detailed project management plans tailored to specific Principal Investigators (PIs), and use productivity tools (e.g., MS Teams, Copilot) to monitor pre‑ and post‑award activities. Provide faculty‑level training and presentations, identify institutional, federal, and extramural support options, cultivate relationships with SOM faculty and staff, and encourage collaborations with UAB faculty, UAB’s OSP, external institutions, foundations, and other collaborators.
Work closely with the Manager to identify and plan strategic development objectives and activities of the office, create monitoring tools, collect and synthesize qualitative and quantitative data, develop data analysis and visualization tools, and populate tracking mechanisms for award activities in the SOM.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Salary Range: $70,425 - $114,440
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
