Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory invites motivated graduate students to join the Earth and Environmental Science Graduate Student Program for paid internships. The program offers mentoring, hands‑on technical experience, and professional development through a structured work plan, aligning with your graduate research.

Participants will tackle Earth science problems across geosciences, atmosphere, hydrology, ecology, and data science, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team and applying AI/ML

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in any physical science discipline.
  • Enroll in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full‑time equivalent) in an accredited degree‑granting program.
  • Provide documentation indicating matriculation into an appropriate degree program.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply innovative methods and tools to tackle complex Earth science problems in global security, sustainable energy, analytical geochemistry, energy infrastructure, and environmental change.
  • Conduct research and analysis to inform national security missions and decisions.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design and implement research projects.
  • Participate in fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and data analysis to advance our understanding of the Earth system.
  • Stay at the forefront of the latest research and technological advancements, and contribute to the development of new knowledge and solutions.
  • Apply AI and ML techniques for Earth systems modeling, remote sensing, environmental data assimilation, uncertainty quantification, and predictive analytics.

What You Will Do

The Earth and Environmental Science (EES) Graduate Student Program offers paid internships for graduate students in a variety of Earth science and data‑driven disciplines. The program provides mentoring, hands‑on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing your graduate research.

  • Develop and apply innovative methods and tools to tackle complex Earth science problems in global security, sustainable energy, analytical geochemistry, energy infrastructure, and environmental change.
  • Conduct research and analysis to inform national security missions and decisions.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design and implement research projects.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in any physical science discipline.

  • Computer programming skills for scientific data acquisition or analysis.
  • Experimental techniques relevant to your selected scientific field(s).
  • Laboratory experience demonstrating attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, in a professional scientific context.
  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.
Work Location

The work is onsite at Los Alamos, NM.

Security and Background Checks

Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre‑employment background checks.
