Job summary

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Prepare engineering design plans, cost estimates, technical correspondence and field investigations for transportation and mobility projects to ensure compliance with the Code of Ordinances and City of Houston (COH) Infrastructure Design Manual (IDM). Review and monitor work performed by design consultants. Represent Houston Public Works (HPW) in meetings and public outreach events. Develop proficiency in engineering design software, standards, and principles. Investigate and respond to any inquiries from other COH departments, external agencies, consultants, contractors and public. Provide technical support to team members and assist with other engineering activities as requested or directed by supervisors and managers.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions. The position may involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations, as with occasional exposure to office chemicals and/or extensive use of a video display terminal.

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier III Level.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires graduation from approved curriculum in engineering that is approved by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers with a satisfactory standing.

Requires graduation from an engineering or related science curriculum at a recognized institution of higher education, other than a curriculum approved by the Board and passage of the eight-hour fundamentals of engineering examination prescribed by the Board.

Possession of a valid Engineering-in-Training Certificate issued by the Board under the current requirements of the Texas Engineering Practice Act.

Preference shall be given to applicants with strong communication skills who have experience reviewing and preparing engineering design plans, construction documents and contracts, and experience in CAD/GIS/MSOffice software.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

However, the department may administer a skill assessment evaluation.
