Job summary

S&S Paving & Construction, LLC is seeking a detail-oriented Grade Checker to support grading and earthwork on construction projects. You will verify elevations, slopes, and alignment to ensure compliance with plans and specs, coordinating with operators, foremen, and survey personnel for efficient, safe operations.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Experience as Grade Checker or in heavy civil construction preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints and grade stakes.
• Familiarity with laser levels, GPS equipment, and surveying instruments preferred.
• Basic math skills and understanding of elevations, measurements, and grades.

Responsibilities

• Check grades, elevations, and slopes using grade rods, lasers, GPS equipment, levels, and other surveying tools.
• Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, grade stakes, and project specifications.
• Communicate grade information to equipment operators to ensure accurate excavation, grading, and paving operations.
• Verify subgrade, aggregate base, and finished grade elevations before paving or concrete placement.
• Set and maintain grade stakes, hubs, and reference points as directed.
• Assist with layout of construction work according to project plans.
• Monitor work progress to ensure compliance with project specifications and tolerances.
• Identify grade discrepancies and communicate corrections to supervisors and equipment operators.
• Maintain and care for surveying and grading equipment.
• Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
• Perform general labor duties and other tasks assigned by supervisors.

Job Summary

S&S Paving & Construction is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Grade Checker to support grading and earthwork operations on construction projects. The Grade Checker is responsible for verifying elevations, slopes, and alignment to ensure work is completed according to project plans and specifications. This position works closely with equipment operators, foremen, and survey personnel to maintain accuracy, efficiency, and quality while promoting a safe work environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Check grades, elevations, and slopes using grade rods, lasers, GPS equipment, levels, and other surveying tools.
• Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, grade stakes, and project specifications.

• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and grade stakes.
• Familiarity with laser levels, GPS equipment, and surveying instruments preferred.
• Basic math skills and understanding of elevations, measurements, and grades.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Reliable attendance and strong work ethic.
• Valid driver's license required.
• CDL is a plus but not required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday.
• Ability to walk uneven terrain for extended periods.
• Ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, windy, and wet weather conditions.
• Ability to work extended hours, evenings, or weekends as project demands require.

Working Conditions

• Primarily outdoors at construction and paving job sites.
• Exposure to moving heavy equipment, dust, noise, uneven terrain, and changing weather conditions.

• Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
