Job summary

The City of Boston seeks an Assistant Superintendent to oversee daily golf course maintenance, turf health, environmental compliance, and staff performance at William J. Devine Golf Course and George Wright Golf Course.

Reporting to the Golf Course Superintendent, you will lead maintenance programs, coordinate with vendors and staff, respond to play-condition concerns, and ensure championship-level playing conditions and safe, efficient operations.

Qualifications

• Three years of progressively responsible experience in golf course maintenance operations including supervision of crews.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily crew briefings, work planning, deployment, and productivity tracking.
• Oversee turf, landscape, bunker, irrigation, and facility maintenance quality control.
• Supervise staff performance, training, safety compliance, and onboarding.
• Assist with staffing schedules and seasonal workforce planning.
• Lead field decision-making when the Superintendent is unavailable.
• Coordinate with professional staff, vendors, and customer-facing teams.
• Respond to play-condition concerns and operational issues.
• Represent maintenance operations in meetings, inspections, and site visits.
• Manage turfgrass programs for greens, tees, fairways, roughs, native areas, and clubhouse grounds.
• Maintain records for chemical, fertilizer, and water-use compliance.
• Monitor irrigation system and coordinate repairs with the Superintendent, contractors, and vendors.
• Assist in OSHA, EPA, DEP and pesticide regulation reporting.
• Conduct turf diagnostics and corrective action planning.
• Direct mowing standards and seasonal cultural practices.
• Oversee pump station operation and water conservation measures.
• Lead safety training and equipment certification.
• Maintain documentation for audits and inspections.
