Job Description: PGY-1 General Surgery Resident Physician

Position Summary:
The PGY-1 General Surgery Resident at Holy Name Medical Center (HNMC) will provide patient-centered care under the supervision of attending physicians while developing the foundational skills and knowledge required for independent practice. This position is part of HNMC’s Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited General Surgery Residency Program, which emphasizes a comprehensive, team-based approach to training. A Resident Physician's responsibilities include patient care activities within the scope of their clinical privileges commensurate with the level of training, attendance at clinical rounds and seminars, timely completion of medical records, and other responsibilities as assigned or as required of all members of the medical staff. The Resident Physician is both a learner and a provider of medical care. As their training progresses, Resident Physicians are expected to gain competence and require less supervision, progressing from on-site and contemporaneous supervision to more indirect and periodic supervision.

Responsibilities:
  1. Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including history-taking, physical exams, and diagnostic assessments.
  2. Develop and implement evidence-based management plans for pre-operative and post-operative patient care.
  3. Assist in surgical procedures, including patient positioning, instrument handling, and suturing.
  4. Perform basic surgical procedures as required under supervision.
  5. Participate in daily rounds, case discussions, and interdisciplinary care planning, including discharge planning.
  6. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  7. Provide patient education and counseling covering health status, test results, disease processes, and discharge planning.
  8. Document patient care in compliance with institutional policies and regulations (admission notes, progress notes, event notes, procedure notes, and discharge summaries).
  9. Engage in didactic sessions, simulations, and other educational activities to meet ACGME competency requirements.
  10. Provide coverage for on-call responsibilities as scheduled, ensuring timely and effective response to patient needs.
Qualifications:
  1. Graduate of an accredited medical school (MD or DO). International Medical Graduates: ECFMG Certification.
  2. Matched through the NRMP Matching Program to this ACGME-accredited residency program.
  3. Successful completion of USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK/COMLEX Level 1 and 2.
  4. Eligibility for a medical license in the state of New Jersey.
  5. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Supervision and Evaluation:
The PGY-1 Resident Physician will work under direct supervision, with increasing autonomy as the ACGME competencies are demonstrated. Performance will be evaluated regularly by Faculty and Program leadership.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to build a strong foundation in Internal Medicine within a supportive and collaborative training environment at Holy Name Medical Center.
