Collecting and compiling geographic data from sources such as maps, surveys, and satellite images. Digitizing and entering geographic data into GIS databases. Creating and updating GIS maps and layers using GIS software. Performing quality control checks on GIS data to ensure accuracy and completeness. Analyzing geographic data to identify patterns, trends, and relationships. Assisting in the development and implementation of GIS projects and initiatives. Providing technical support and training to GIS users. Maintaining GIS databases and archives. Keeping abreast of advancements in GIS technology and best practices. Collaborating with other departments to integrate GIS data into business processes.
A GIS Technician should have a bachelor's degree in geography, GIS, or a related field, although some positions may require only a certificate or associate's degree. Strong technical skills, including proficiency in GIS software and databases, are essential, as well as attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Good communication and teamwork skills are also important, as GIS Technicians often collaborate with other professionals to achieve project goals.
