Job summary

NV5 is seeking an Engineer in Training or licensed Civil Engineer to lead a team of soil/concrete technicians, inspectors, and laboratory staff in California. The role emphasizes problem solving, coordination across disciplines, and compliance with geotechnical and material testing standards.

The successful candidate will manage projects, review reports for agencies, and ensure timeliness and quality while traveling to job sites as needed. EIT or CA PE within 6–12 months is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with emphasis in materials/geotechnical is a plus.
• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
• CA PE License or obtain within 6–12 months of employment; open to other US state licenses.
• Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and problem-solve.
• Knowledge of building codes and construction industry standards.
• Experience with AASHTO and ASTM test methods for construction materials.
• Experience reviewing concrete/asphalt mix designs.
• Proficiency in MS Office.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Manages special inspectors and technician staff.
• Manages projects (bridges, roadway, schools, and commercial) and associated geotechnical budgets.
• Prepares and reviews inspection and observation reports submitted to various agencies and other clients.
• Plans, assigns, prioritizes, evaluates, and reviews the work of inspectors, technicians, and support staff for accuracy and timeliness.
• Oversees the preparation and submission of timely reports and maintenance of records.
• Develops and implements policies and programs for special inspection and testing.
• Communicates changes in inspection guidelines and regulations; manages budgetary alignment with Principals.
• Oversees materials testing on soils, asphalt, and concrete; IBC Special Inspections under IBC Chapter 17.
• Maintains a good driving record and willingness to travel.
• Oversees laboratory qualifications.
