Job summary

AKRF is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer based in New York City to join the Engineering group. The role involves geotechnical oversight, analysis, and foundation design across diverse urban sites.

Ideal candidates have 8–12 years in geotechnical engineering, a civil engineering degree (master’s preferred), and NYS PE licensure or the ability to obtain it within six months. Travel is required, with a competitive compensation package.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering; master’s in geotechnical is a plus.
  • 8–12 years in geotechnical engineering and field oversight.
  • NYS PE licensure preferred; cross-state licensure acceptable with NYS filing within 6 months.
  • Willingness to travel to NYC, Long Island, Hudson Valley, CT and NJ; possible overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Provide geotechnical oversight and logging of explorations (borings, test pits, CPTs).
  • Develop laboratory and field testing programs and prepare reports.
  • Perform analyses for slope stability, settlement, and foundation design.
  • Manage multiple projects and coordinate with urban foundation construction.
  • Provide field oversight for Special Inspection and SOE-related activities.

About the Role

The Engineering group at AKRF is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to be based out of New York City. The potential candidate will have the opportunity to work in an environment of encouragement and collaboration to help AKRF shape the future of our communities.

Job Responsibilities
  • Providing geotechnical oversight and logging of geotechnical explorations (borings, test pits, CPTs);
  • Developinglaboratoryandfieldtestingprograms;
  • Preparingengineeringreports,includingtheevaluationofcollectedfieldandlaboratoryresults, preparation offigures and drawings;
  • Preparingengineeringanalysesforslopestability,settlementandconsolidationestimates,deep foundationdesign(compressive,uplift,andlateralcapacities),matfoundationdesign,ground surcharging,andgroundimprovementtechniques(soilgrouting,groundfreezing,etc.),andsoil liquefaction;
  • Managementofmultipleprojects(priorprojectmanagementskillsaplus);
  • Workingknowledge andrelated fieldexperienceregardingfoundation-related construction in urban areas;
  • Providing field oversight for Special Inspection during construction for subgrade inspection, controlled filling and in-place density testing, deep foundation installation (driven/drilled piles). Underpinning and Support of Excavation (SOE) experience a plus. New York City experience is a plus.
  • 8-12 years’ experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (a master’s degree with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering is a plus).
  • NYS PE licensure preferred, PE licensure in other states will be required to obtain NYS licensure within 6 months of hire.
  • Required to travel to work sites in New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, Connecticut and New Jersey, with work being performed Monday through Friday with the possibility of occasional overtime, evening, and weekend work.
  • OSHA 10-hr or 40-hour HAZWOPER training a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience using commercial geotechnical software (e.g., AutoCAD, gINT, APile, LPile, All Pile, GRL WEAP, Slide, CT Shoring Suite, PLAXIS, Shake 2000, and other advanced modelling programs a plus.
Compensation

Compensation will range from $120k to $150K, and commensurate with experience.
