Job summary

AKRF is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to be based in New York City. The role involves supervising geotechnical explorations, developing testing programs, and producing engineering reports drawing on field and lab results.

Requirements include 8–12 years in geotechnical engineering, a Civil Engineering degree, and an Engineer-In-Training certificate; NYS PE preferred. Travel across NY/NJ CT may be required, with overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • 8–12 years’ geotechnical experience.
  • NYS PE licensure preferred; other state licensure OK for NYS via transfer within 6 months.
  • Willingness to travel to NYC-area work sites.

Responsibilities

  • Provide geotechnical oversight and logging of explorations (borings, pits, CPTs).
  • Develop laboratory and field testing programs.
  • Prepare engineering reports with data interpretation and drawings.
  • Perform analyses for slope stability, settlement, deep foundation and soil improvement.
  • Manage multiple projects and liaise with construction teams in urban settings.
  • Coordinate field oversight for inspections and SOE-related activities in NYC area.

About The Role

The Engineering group at AKRF is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to be based out of New York City. The potential candidate will have the opportunity to work in an environment of encouragement and collaboration to help AKRF shape the future of our communities.

Job Responsibilities
  • Providing geotechnical oversight and logging of geotechnical explorations (borings, test pits, CPTs);
  • Developing laboratory and field testing programs;
  • Preparing engineering reports, including the evaluation of collected field and laboratory results, preparation of figures and drawings;
  • Preparing engineering analyses for slope stability, settlement and consolidation estimates, deep foundation design (compressive, uplift, and lateral capacities), mat foundation design, ground surcharging, and ground improvement techniques (soil grouting, ground freezing, etc.), and soil liquefaction;
  • Management of multiple projects (prior project management skills a plus);
  • Working knowledge and related field experience regarding foundation-related construction in urban areas;
  • Providing field oversight for Special Inspection during construction for subgrade inspection, controlled filling and in-place density testing, deep foundation installation (driven/drilled piles). Underpinning and Support of Excavation (SOE) experience a plus. New York City experience is a plus.
Essential Requirements
  • 8-12 years’ experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (a master’s degree with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering is a plus).
  • Engineer-In-Training Certificate
  • NYS PE licensure preferred, PE licensure in other states will be required to obtain NYS licensure within 6 months of hire.
  • Required to travel to work sites in New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, Connecticut and New Jersey, with work being performed Monday through Friday with the possibility of occasional overtime, evening, and weekend work.
  • OSHA 10-hr or 40-hour HAZWOPER training a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience using commercial geotechnical software (e.g., AutoCAD, gINT, APile, LPile, All Pile, GRL WEAP, Slide, CT Shoring Suite, PLAXIS, Shake 2000, and other advanced modelling programs a plus).
Compensation

Compensation will range from $120k to $150K, and commensurate with experience.
