Job description

Geomodeller (In-Situ Heavy Oil)

Raise is currently hiring a contract team member on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader.

Responsibilities
  • Develops and maintains fit-for-purpose three-dimensional geological models for in-situ heavy-oil development, reservoir simulation, well placement, reserves evaluation, and production optimization. The role integrates geological, geophysical, petrophysical, core, fluid, and production data to represent reservoir architecture, bitumen distribution, property variation, and the key uncertainties controlling thermal recovery performance.
  • The successful candidate will construct structural, stratigraphic, facies, and petrophysical models for SAGD, cyclic steam stimulation, steamflood, and solvent-assisted developments. Responsibilities include defining the modeling framework, correlating wells, building geological surfaces and zones, modeling facies and mudstone architecture, and distributing properties such as porosity, permeability, water saturation, bitumen saturation, net-to-gross, and shale volume. Particular emphasis will be placed on representing reservoir continuity, inclined heterolithic stratification, mudstone barriers and baffles, top and bottom water, gas zones, thief intervals, and caprock-related constraints.
  • The role will generate deterministic and probabilistic model realizations that capture material geological uncertainty and support development decisions. The individual will work closely with geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists, reservoir engineers, geomechanics specialists, drilling teams, and production technologists to ensure static models are geologically defensible and suitable for thermal simulation. Responsibilities will include model upscaling, volumetric calculations, uncertainty analysis, sensitivity testing, and reconciliation of modeled reservoir behavior with injection, production, pressure, temperature, observation-well, and 4D seismic data.
  • The Senior Geomodeller will support pad planning, well-pair and infill placement, horizontal well targeting, geosteering, development sequencing, reserves assessments, and evaluation of bypassed bitumen. The position will provide technical assurance of modeling workflows, contractor-generated models, assumptions, and data quality. The individual will also maintain reproducible modeling workflows, document uncertainty ranges and limitations, mentor less-experienced staff, and clearly communicate model implications to technical teams and decision-makers.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in geology, geophysics, petroleum geoscience, geological engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of relevant oil and gas industry experience, including substantial geomodeling experience in in-situ heavy-oil reservoirs.
  • Advanced proficiency in structural, stratigraphic, facies, and petrophysical modeling.
  • Strong knowledge of unconsolidated clastic reservoirs, sedimentology, stratigraphic correlation, petrophysics, geostatistics, and heavy-oil geology.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate seismic, well-log, core, pressure, production, and surveillance information.
  • Experience generating multiple realizations, quantifying geological uncertainty, calculating volumetrics, and preparing models for thermal simulation.
  • Strong understanding of scale transition, upscaling, grid design, data conditioning, and static-to-dynamic model integration.
  • Strong technical judgment, quality-assurance, documentation, project-management, and multidisciplinary communication skills.
  • Right to work in the USA
Preferred Knowledge and Experience
  • Direct experience modeling reservoirs developed through SAGD, cyclic steam stimulation, steamflood, or solvent-assisted recovery.
  • Detailed knowledge of mudstone architecture, inclined heterolithic stratification, channel systems, water-bearing intervals, gas zones, and their effects on steam-chamber development.
  • Experience supporting pad design, horizontal well placement, geosteering, infill opportunities, reserves evaluations, and development optimization.
  • Experience reconciling geological models with thermal simulation, production history, temperature data, observation wells, and 4D seismic.
  • Advanced proficiency with Petrel, including geostatistical property modeling, uncertainty workflows, volumetrics, model updating, and simulation-grid preparation; familiarity with INTERSECT, Spotfire, Power BI, or Python is advantageous.
  • Experience with automated or scripted workflows, model-version control, data governance, and technical assurance.
  • Demonstrated leadership through multidisciplinary studies, peer reviews, workflow development, and mentoring.
