Qualifications

Job Summary:

CMS Energy is seeking GIS Technician I professionals to support our Gas Distribution Geospatial Management & Analytics Team. This role involves inputting, verifying, and updating gas service and distribution data in GIS systems based on field redlined designs and work order information. Technicians will ensure data integrity, produce spatial analysis reports, and collaborate with internal teams to resolve discrepancies and meet production goals.

The position requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a virtual/remote environment while occasionally visiting Consumers Energy Service Centers as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enter gas service record and work order information into GIS (ESRI ArcGIS) and SAP Work Management System.
  • Verify quality, accuracy, and completeness of gas distribution data.
  • Correct data attributes and asset locations for gas distribution as needed.
  • Interpret construction drawings and as-built documentation to determine completed work and required GIS updates.
  • Produce specialty maps using spatial analysis and provide asset analysis upon request.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve data discrepancies and meet production deadlines.
  • Learn and adopt new systems, processes, and tools to improve GIS data management.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Royal Oak) / Bachelor’s degree or GIS certificate preferred (Lansing).
  • Knowledge of GIS concepts, ESRI ArcGIS software, and utility operations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel and Word.
  • Ability to follow established guidelines, work independently, and manage workload effectively in a virtual/remote environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Positive attitude and aptitude for learning new skills and responsibilities.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Experience with SAP or other Work Management Systems.
  • Background in utility gas service records or engineering work.
  • Strong customer service orientation and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform asset analysis and produce specialty maps using spatial data.
