Jr. GIS/Field Survey Engineer/Technician

Temp-Perm

This is an ideal role for a recent GIS or Civil Engineering graduate looking to build a career in field Utility Energy engineering. You will spend 50% of your time in the office managing high-detail digital maps and 50% in the field capturing data on critical infrastructure projects.

Working for a leading Utility Energy Consulting firm, you will support DOT initiatives focused on the rehabilitation and retrofit of bridges and roadways. You’ll be responsible for ensuring our "Digital Twin" of the natural gas network is accurate, traceable, and ready for real-time use by field crews.

Key Responsibilities

• GIS Mapping & Data Entry (50%)
• Digital Asset Mapping: Use ArcGIS Pro to digitize and manage natural gas distribution networks, including pipes, valves, and fittings.
• Record Verification: Research and document "birth records" for infrastructure, including manufacturer info, installation dates, and historical maintenance logs.
• Data Quality: Learn and apply rigorous Quality Control (QC) standards to ensure mapping data is "survey-grade" and compliant with DOT requirements.

• Field Surveying & Data Collection (50%)
• On-Site Collection: Travel to roadway and bridge project sites to locate and verify the position of utility assets.
• GPS Technology: Operate high-accuracy GNSS/GPS equipment and handheld data collectors to capture spatial coordinates of above-ground and exposed utilities.
• Infrastructure Support: Assist in documenting how gas lines interact with existing bridge structures and industrial facilities during rehabilitation projects.
• Mobile GIS: Ensure data collected in the field is synced immediately to the cloud so it is available as "Active Information" on field laptops and tablets.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Civil Engineering, or a related technical field.

Experience: 0–2 years of experience (internships or course projects count!) using ArcGIS Pro

Mobility: Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record for frequent travel to project sites.

Field Readiness: Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and traversing construction sites or DOT right-of-ways.

Technical Aptitude: Ability to learn the Esri Utility Network framework and understand the physical components of a gas distribution system.
