Job summary

The City of Fredericksburg, Virginia is seeking a Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst to maintain geospatial data, produce GIS products, and support city operations for staff, public safety, and the community. This full-time role emphasizes problem solving, collaboration across departments, and shaping the City’s geospatial strategy.

Requirements include an Associate’s degree and two years of professional GIS experience in data management, map production, and spatial analysis; a Virginia

• Associate's degree in Cartography, Geography, Landscape Ecology, Natural Resources, Computer Science, or related field
• Two years of professional GIS experience involving data management, map production, and spatial analysis
• Equivalent education and experience considered
• Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License
• Ability to pass a Police background check and obtain CJIS Certification

Responsibilities

• Maintain geospatial data, produce high-quality GIS products, and ensure GIS systems are accurate and reliable for staff, public safety, and the community
• Support citywide operations by developing maps and apps for diverse users and providing training and support to GIS users
• Troubleshoot GIS systems, script workflows, and leverage ESRI applications to ensure reliable performance
• Collaborate across departments and communicate GIS principles, including fieldwork when needed

What You'll Do

As a GIS Analyst for the City of Fredericksburg, support citywide operations by maintaining geospatial data, producing high-quality GIS products, and ensuring our GIS systems remain accurate, accessible, and reliable for staff, public safety, and the community. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, working with diverse datasets, collaborating across departments, and helping shape the City’s geospatial strategy. Additional work assignments may include:

• GIS Operations and Data Management: Manage daily GIS operations by maintaining various geospatial datasets, developing spatial databases and GIS portals, coordinating imagery analysis, and performing GPS-based field inspections.
• Data Analysis and Support: Analyzing geospatial data to aid city management, creating maps and apps for diverse users, and providing training and support to GIS users.
• Technical Expertise and Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot GIS systems, scripting for workflows, and proficiency with ESRI applications and portals to ensure reliable system performance.
• Communication and Collaboration: Emphasizes strong GIS principles, communication skills, decision-making, and collaboration, along with comfort in fieldwork and interpreting land records.

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate's degree in Cartography, Geography, Landscape Ecology, Natural Resources, Computer Science, or related field
• Two years of professional GIS experience involving data management, map production, and spatial analysis
• Equivalent education and experience considered
• Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License
• Ability to pass a Police background check and obtain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Certification

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong grasp of GIS principles, cartography, database management, and geospatial data integrity
• Knowledge of scripting in GIS processes and workflows.
• Experience working with the ESRI Suite of applications, including ArcGIS Pro, Experience Builder, and online ESRI applications
• Ability to analyze complex datasets and generate accurate, useful mapping products
• Knowledge of ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise portals and content
• Skilled in technical troubleshooting and adapting to evolving technologies
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to train staff and create clear documentation
• Ability to prioritize responsibilities, make informed decisions, and collaborate effectively
• Comfort with occasional fieldwork, research of land records, and interpretation of plats/surveys
