Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst

Position Overview:

The GIS Analyst serves as the installation's geospatial data specialist, developing, maintaining, and supporting the databases, applications, and tools that underpin architectural, engineering, and base management practices. This role creates and revises maps, charts, and cartographic products, investigating source materials, assembling aerial photographs, and drafting, digitizing, and editing geospatial data, while using computerized systems to analyze geographic data supporting decisions on geology, ecology, land use, demographics, transportation, and other domains tied to the Air Force Base Comprehensive Plan. The GIS Analyst also updates, coordinates, and implements CADD/GIS data such as maps, real estate, and engineering records, advising on techniques and tools for resolving CADD/GIS-related technical problems. Candidates must hold either an associate's degree in science or at least 2 years of experience in a technical field, along with extensive knowledge of geospatial concepts and practices including cartography, remote sensing, and scientific data visualization; familiarity with digital geospatial processes and standards such as the Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) and Federal Geographic Data Committee guidelines; skills in planning and implementing state-of-the-art mapping systems for installation organizations such as Civil Engineering, Fire Department, Security Forces, and Emergency/Disaster Preparedness; and the ability to evaluate existing facility management systems and instruct others on new geospatial procedures.

Job Responsibilities:

• Serves as a specialist for geospatial data, with responsibility for developing, maintaining, and supporting the databases, applications, and tools necessary for architectural, engineering, and base management practices.
• Performs work related to the creation and revision of existing maps, charts, and related cartographic products. This includes the investigation of source materials, assembling aerial photographs, drafting, digitizing, and editing geospatial data.
• Uses computerized systems to display and analyze geographic data to support decisions related to geology, ecology, land use, demographics, transportation, and other domains related to the Air Force Base Comprehensive Plan.
• Update, coordinate, and implement CADD/GIS data such as maps, real estate, and engineering data, and provide advice on the techniques and tools available for solving CADD/GIS-related technical problems.

Required Qualifications:

• Must have either an associate's degree in science or at least 2 years of experience in a technical field and must possess extensive knowledge of geospatial concepts, theories, principles, and practices, including a basic understanding of cartography, remote sensing, and scientific data visualization.
• Knowledge of digital geospatial processes and products, including data production, management, archival, and maintenance processing in accordance with applicable standards such as the Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDS) and Federal Geographic Data Committee standards.
• Skills in planning, developing, and implementing state-of-the-art mapping systems for use by installation organizations (e.g., Civil Engineering, Fire Department, Security Forces, and Emergency/Disaster Preparedness).
• Has ability to review and evaluate existing facility management systems and provide instruction on new state-of-the-art engineering and geospatial procedures.
