Job summary

The Research Specialist III at MUSC's Hollings Cancer Center Translational Science Laboratory Shared Resource performs complex experimental procedures, operates and maintains instruments, and trains core users to follow SOPs.

You will document results, manage workflows, and contribute to developing new assay capabilities across platforms such as NGS, ddPCR, 10X, NanoString, and DSP, while maintaining clear records and communicating progress to the core manager.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or related field and two years advanced journal-level work experience in a clinical or research setting.
  • PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field with 0–2 years experience or MS with at least 3-4 years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Experience with NGS and/or ddPCR is a plus.
  • Good understanding of genomics and molecular biology is required.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • 35% Performs automated nucleic acid extraction, library preparation for single-cell sequencing and RNA NGS, ddPCR, 10X Spatial Transcriptomics, Nanostring nCounter and DSP; documents procedures and results using core platform.
  • 30% Trains all instruments, develops and standardizes new assay capabilities, provides project management, and teaches users to follow SOPs at the core.
  • 30% Tracks, stores, and processes samples; maintains records and databases; updates management; assists in invoicing; meets with the manager regularly to discuss progress.
  • 5% Supports special projects as needed and completes assigned tasks on time.
