Job description

Salary range for this position is $38.92 – $56.44 per hour. Placement within the range depends on experience, education, and internal equity considerations. For roles represented by a labor union, placement follows the collective bargaining agreement.

Description

The Genetic Counselor is a core member of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Analyze genetic information to identify patients or families at risk for specific disorders or syndromes.
• Explain genetic testing modalities such as panel testing, exome sequencing, and genome sequencing.
• Provide genetic counseling in movement disorders, including presymptomatic and diagnostic situations.
• Assess patients’ psychological and emotional needs, including stress, fear of test results, and financial concerns, and make referral recommendations or assist patients in managing outcomes.
• Deliver counseling information, education, and reassurance to patients and family members.
• Determine or coordinate treatment plans by ordering laboratory services, reviewing genetics literature, and considering clinical histories.
• Discuss testing options and associated risks, benefits, and limitations to aid informed decision‑making.
• Interpret laboratory results and communicate findings to patients or physicians.
• Interview patients or review medical records to obtain comprehensive medical histories, and document findings.
• Engage in research activities related to Movement Disorders Biorepository, PDGene, patient database maintenance, validation of research results, and attendance at movement neurogenetics conferences.

Qualifications

• Licensed Genetic Counselor.
• Zero to two (2) years of relevant experience.
