Job description

The Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) provides support to genetic counselors at the Massachusetts General Hospital Center. Responsibilities include clinical, research, and administrative duties, offering individuals first-hand knowledge of patient care in genetics.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Package and ship clinical testing specimens
  • Perform data entry and maintain internal genetics databases
  • Maintain stock of testing kits, patient handouts, and supplies
  • Act as liaison between genetic testing labs, insurance providers, and genetic counselors
  • Support development of patient education materials and events
  • Follow HIPAA guidelines for patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Support scheduling and other departmental duties as assigned

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Communicate with patients regarding clinical care
  • Complete genetic testing requisition forms, interpret pedigrees, and assign codes for billing
  • Track communication with laboratories about testing status
  • Navigate electronic health records and databases for patient information
  • Other departmental duties as assigned

Research Responsibilities

  • Verify and update study data and forms
  • Manage demographic and clinical data entry into research systems
  • Contact subjects for study information as needed
  • Other departmental duties as assigned

Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in biology or genetics (preferred), 1-2 years of experience with patients or in a medical office (preferred), effective communication skills, ability to work independently and in teams, and proficiency in MS Office. Experience handling biological specimens and working with diverse populations is desirable. The role requires confidentiality, attention to detail, initiative, and troubleshooting skills. Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel is required.
