Job Summary
The Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) provides support to genetic counselors at the Massachusetts General Hospital Center. Responsibilities of the GCA include clinical, research and administrative duties. Individuals in this position will gain first-hand knowledge of patient care related to the field of genetics.Qualifications
Administrative Responsibilities
-Package and ship clinical testing specimens
-Perform data entry and maintenance of internal genetics databases
-Maintain stock of testing kits, patient handouts and other supplies
-Act as liaison between genetic testing laboratories, health insurance providers, and genetic counselors
-Provide administrative support to GC colleagues to develop patient education materials and patient-centered educational events
-Follow HIPAA guidelines for the management of patient privacy and confidentiality
-Support with scheduling as necessary
-Other departmental specific duties as assigned
Clinical Responsibilities
-Communicate with patients, as necessary, related to clinical care
-Complete genetic testing requisition forms, including interpretation of patient pedigrees and assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes to ensure accurate billing
-Track the status of ongoing communication with clinical laboratories related to coverage and progress of genetic testing
-Navigate electronic health record and clinical databases to obtain clinic notes and family history information as needed
-Other departmental specific duties as assigned
Research Responsibilities
- Verify accuracy of study forms and data and update study forms per protocol
-Obtain, compile, and enter demographic, clinical and necessary study data into study electronic data capture system
-Contact subjects to gather study information as needed

Additional Job Details (if applicable)
-Bachelor’s degree Bachelor’s degree in biology or genetics preferred
-1-2 years experince working with patients and/or in medical office preferred
-Must be able to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with clinicians and patients
-Must be able to work independently
-Must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team in a busy clinical practice
-Must be comfortable transporting sealed biological specimens
-Administrative experience in a medical office is a plus
-Experience working with patients is a plus
-Handle confidential and sensitive information with care
-Proficient in MS Word and Powerpoint
-Skilled in MS Excel
-Excellent attention to detail
-Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
-Comfortable working with a diverse population and interacting with medical personnel
-Good communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail are essential
-Requires the ability to take initiative and troubleshoot
