Job summary

Kirby Corporation seeks a field service technician to maintain, inspect, test, diagnose, repair, and upgrade power-generation equipment at customer locations. The role focuses on diesel- and natural-gas-powered generators, ABTs, and related controls, with potential dockside or sea assignments.

The technician will travel to client sites, perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and document work performed. A strong background in diesel engines and marine applications is preferred.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; technical to diesel-engine certification preferred.
Five or more years of related field-service experience preferred.
Experience with mtu and Volvo Penta equipment is highly desirable; marine-service experience is a plus.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
Ability to read service manuals and schematics; proficient with diagnostic tools and OEM software.

Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on standby generator equipment and related components.
Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, fuel, cooling, starting, and control issues affecting generators.

Overview

Responsible for field maintenance, inspection, testing, diagnostics, repair, and upgrades of power-generation and industrial equipment at customer locations. The primary focus is diesel- and natural-gas-powered generator systems, generator ends, controls, automatic transfer switches, circuit breakers, and diesel fire pumps. The role also supports commercial and pleasure-craft marine applications, including engines, engine components, propulsion systems, electronics, and related subassemblies at dock, in the shop, or at sea.

Salary Range: $30.00 - $50.00 per hour

Sign-On Bonus:

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities - Generator Systems

Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, operational testing, and load-related checks on standby generator equipment, automatic transfer switches, circuit breakers, controls, and diesel fire pumps.
Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical, mechanical, fuel, cooling, starting, charging, control, and communication issues affecting generators and related equipment.
Perform repairs and upgrades on diesel- and natural-gas-powered generator sets, generator ends, controls, transfer switches, fire pumps, and industrial engines.
Use multimeters, megohm meters, OEM diagnostic software, laptops, and portable diagnostic tools to identify equipment faults and verify repairs.
Evaluate equipment condition, explain findings, make repair recommendations, and identify the parts and materials required to complete work.
Confirm completed repairs through functional testing and document equipment condition, test results, recommendations, and additional work needed.
Coordinate with the parts department to identify and order parts for repairs and scheduled maintenance.
Complete work orders, service reports, and time sheets accurately and on time.

Additional Responsibilities - Marine, Industrial, Customer Service

Diagnose and perform complex and major mechanical repairs on commercial and pleasure-craft vessels at the customer location, dockside, in the shop, or at sea.
Service marine diesel engines, engine components, propulsion systems, electronics, and related subassemblies.
Perform routine maintenance according to established manufacturer guidelines and service schedules.
Support industrial-engine service assignments based on customer and business needs.
Address customer needs professionally while following company procedures and clearly communicating repair status and recommendations.
Perform all work in accordance with established quality standards and safety procedures.
Work independently in a safe, organized, and efficient manner while maintaining a clean work area and service vehicle.
Organize assigned work and use available time effectively to meet service deadlines.
Be available for overtime as required to complete repairs, including occasional weekends and holidays.
Work at customer facilities, outdoors, aboard vessels, and in shop environments. A service truck is supplied, and the position may be dispatched from home.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or diesel-engine certification preferred.
Five or more years of related field-service experience preferred, including hands-on experience with diesel engines, standby generators, electrical controls, or comparable equipment.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot generator systems, transfer switches, controls, and diesel engines.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
Full complement of basic standard and metric hand tools, including torque wrenches, required.
Experience with mtu and Volvo Penta equipment is highly desirable; marine-service experience is a plus.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to read and apply service manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, and equipment specifications.
Proficiency with laptops, portable diagnostic equipment, OEM software, and basic computer navigation.
Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
Dependable, trustworthy, motivated, and able to work both independently and as a cooperative team member.
Strong organization, time-management, troubleshooting, and customer-service skills.
