Job summary

State of North Carolina - Department of Transportation is seeking a General Utility Worker (S) to support the New Hanover County Equipment Shop. Responsibilities include yard maintenance, building upkeep, cleaning, and equipment detailing. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work in all weather conditions.

Safety toe shoes are required within 30 days of hire. Prior experience with small hand tools and power tools is preferred, and applicants may qualify via education or related experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform yard maintenance including mowing and trimming.

• Follow supervisor instructions and safety regulations.

Responsibilities include a variety of manual labor tasks in the upkeep of the Department's grounds, buildings, and equipment, such as yard maintenance (cut and trim grass, etc.), general building maintenance (cleaning, painting, repairs, etc.), cleaning floors (sweeping, mopping, polishing, etc.), removing trash, cleaning windows, cleaning restrooms, washing and detailing equipment, retrieving and delivering parts, and performing other related duties as required.Some knowledge of the application of trade skills to do the duties assigned. Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in performing work assignment. Ability to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by the supervisor. Work will require exposure to all types of weather. Work may require lifting up to 50 pounds. Safety toe shoes are required within 30 days of hire date. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc., which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays.
