Job summary

PeaceHealth is seeking a General Surgeon - Per Diem to join our team in Ketchikan, Alaska. This rural island community offers a close-knit environment and a unique opportunity to provide comprehensive surgical care.

The ideal candidate is board-certified with a General Surgery Residency and at least 5 years of post-training experience, with an interest in GI‑heavy practice. A small wound care component is expected, with support from an RN on staff.

Qualifications

• Board-certified MD/DO who has completed a General Surgery Residency.
• Minimum 5 years of post-training experience due to solo and rural nature of the role.
• Interest in a GI-heavy practice is preferred.
• Ability to work independently with creative patient solutions on a small island community.

Responsibilities

• Provide general surgery coverage for ED and inpatients; perform needed surgeries.
• Work in a facility with 3 ORs and GI/Urology visiting specialists as needed.
• Collaborate with RN/LPN staff and use Epic EHR for patient care documentation.
• Accept a call schedule of roughly 1:3 with 24/7 availability for emergencies.

Ideal Candidate

• Board Certified MD/DO who has successfully completed a General Surgery Residency


• At least 5 years of post-training experience due to the solo and rural nature of this position


• Interest in a practice that is GI-heavy preferred


• Ability to work independently and be excited about creative solutions for patients in our island community


• Willingness to do a small amount of Wound Care, as there is not a wound care clinic on island. There is a Wound Care certified RN on staff

Practice Highlights

• Clinic Hours Monday-Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm


• Call is 1:3 (roughly 10 days/month); 24-hour call for ED and Inpatients and any urgent surgeries


• RN/LPN who have been on the team for many years – the practice flows really well


• Good OR capabilities (no robotics)


• 3 ORs - 2 are staffed all the time / 1 Minor OR / Procedure room in clinic for in-office General Surgery procedures


• Visiting specialists for GI and Urology


• Epic EHR
